Choline

The brain and nervous systems need the important nutrient choline to regulate memory, mood, muscle control, and more.

We need choline to form the membranes that surround our body's cells. A small amount of choline is made in the liver, but most of the choline in your body comes from diet.

Choline benefits

Choline encourages the production of acetylcholine that supports:

  • Metabolism, muscles, cells & genes: Choline plays a key role in healthy metabolism, cellular health (building cell membranes), muscle function, and gene expression.
  • Memory, cognition & learning: Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter essential for healthy cognition, supporting memory function. Studies have found CDP-choline is a neuroprotectant and a promoter of neuroplasticity, promoting nerve signaling and overall brain function.
  • Encourages mood health: In addition to its well-studied brain power benefits, low doses of CDP-choline have been shown to support a healthy mood.

Choline supplement

Having enough choline is important for our brain's ability to make acetylcholine, especially when the brain is working hard or under stress. Because of its protective role, choline supplementation becomes increasingly important for brain health as we age. However, adding extra choline to the diet alone does not mean that our brains will make more acetylcholine; unless there's a need for it.

Citicoline (also known as CDP-choline) is a choline precursor, and studies shows that it's highly available and well-absorbed in the body. Citicoline can encourage the production of acetylcholine and helps support memory, focus and overall cognition.
